Trinidad Carnival: $1,000 A Day
Trinidad Carnival - the mere mention of it brings a smile to my face. It's a time when the ordinary becomes extraordinary, and when the whole island of Trinidad and Tobago comes alive with the pulsating rhythm of soca music and the vibrant colors of costumes and parades. But the high costs are what keep people from deciding if they want to go so I decided to provide a detailed breakdown of all my costs for my 2023 Trinidad carnival trip. I have friends who are locals so I am at advantage
People love Trinidad Carnival because it's a celebration like no other - a time to let loose, to let go of inhibitions, and to indulge in the pure joy of living. It's a time to connect and make new memories. Dancing in the streets, sipping a cold drink under the shade of a tree, or cheering on your favorite band, Trinidad Carnival has something for everyone. Let the spirit of Carnival sweep you up in its warm embrace. You never know, you might just find yourself falling in love with the magic of Trinidad Carnival! Like I did.
"The Greatest Show on Earth," is a vibrant and colorful celebration that takes place every year in Trinidad and Tobago. It's a time of happiness, music, and dancing, where people come together to celebrate life, culture, and tradition. However, participating in Carnival can be expensive, especially for those who are not familiar with the costs involved.
In this post, we're taking a deep dive into the top 7 things to know about Trinidad Carnival with a detailed cost breakdown.
Costumes and Playing Mas:
The highlight of Trinidad Carnival is the costume parade, where revelers wear elaborate and colorful costumes, dance, and perform to the sound of soca music. The costumes are often made by professional designers and can cost anywhere from $400 to $2,100 or more, depending on the complexity, quality of the design and the type of backpack. The feathers are not included in the initial cost and are an additional cost.Fetes and Parties:
Carnival is not just about parades; it's also about fetes and parties. Fetes are large parties that take place throughout the Carnival season, featuring live music, art, dancing, and food. This is another large cost depending on how many events you do a day. We do at least 2 a day which can be costly as tickets range from $100 to $300 per person. My two favorite fetes are Soca Brainwash and Sunrise Breakfast fete. Please note: You will not be sleeping!Food and Drink:
Food and drink are a big part of Trinidad Carnival. Some of my favorite foods are doubles, bake and shark and aloo pie. Food and drink vendors are abundant during Carnival but most places close by 10pm so make sure to get what you need before then or you’ll be stuck on an hour line for KFC. I ate SO much KFC chicken in Trinidad but this year I will plan accordingly.Accommodation:
If you're planning to attend Trinidad Carnival, you'll need a place to stay. Hotels and guesthouses in Trinidad and Tobago can be quite expensive during Carnival season, with prices ranging from $200 to $500 per night or more. Consider booking a room through Airbnb or staying with friends or family to save on costs.Transportation:
Getting around during Carnival can be challenging, especially in Port of Spain, where the parades and festivities take place. Taxis and private cars are abundant, but prices will be high, especially during peak hours. Consider using public transportation or walking, as many venues are within walking distance if you’re staying in the area. Some people opt for a private driver, this is what I did and I loved my experience but traffic is wild.Safety:
As with any large event, safety is a concern during Trinidad Carnival. Theft, pickpocketing, and other crimes are common, so it's important to take precautions. Stay in well-lit areas, avoid carrying large amounts of cash, and keep valuables secure. I have not had any negative experience but when drinking alcohol, try to still be diligent.Culture and Tradition:
Trinidad Carnival is not just a party; it's also a celebration of culture and tradition. It's a time to experience the rich history and heritage of Trinidad and Tobago, from the music and dance to the food and art. Take the time to learn about the traditions and customs that surround Carnival and immerse yourself in the local culture. You will not regret it.
Tips for Saving on Costs:
Plan Ahead: Book your accommodations, transportation, and tickets to events 6 months to a full year in advance to avoid higher prices.
Use Coupons and Discounts: Look for coupons and discounts online, especially for food and drink vendors.
Avoid Peak Hours: Try to avoid peak hours, especially when it comes to transportation, as prices tend to be higher during these times.
Share Costs: Consider sharing costs with friends or family, such as accommodations and transportation.
DIY Costumes: Instead of buying a costume, consider making your own. You can find materials at local craft stores or online.
Pack Your Own Food and Drink: Instead of buying food and drink from vendors, pack your own to save money.
If you are thinking about doing any of the above cost-savings tips aside from booking early then please don’t go to Trinidad carnival. Do yourself and us all a favor and book another trip. You’ll be the one complaining Trinidad carnival is not worth it and it will because you did not experience it authentically. It is an expensive trip but once you commit to the flight, please know the costs will go up from there. I spent about $5,000 when I went to Trinidad carnival in 2022. I will provide my updated cost sheet below so you can mentally prepare for it.
For a grand total of $6,550 so almost $1,000 a day.
Finding accommodation for Trinidad Carnival will be one of the hardest things you ever do. It is one of the most demanded carnivals in the world, therefore accommodation prices are high, and unfortunately, availability is low. Aim to look for accommodation around Port of Spain as most of the activities are there. Both times I’ve been, we’ve not been able to secure a hotel in Port of Spain. This year we will be in Saint George 20 minutes away.
The most popular hotel option on the island is the Hyatt Regency. There is also the Hilton Hotel, Courtyard by Marriot, Brix by Marriott, and Radisson Hotel. These hotels can go for around $650US a night and sell out fast. Another great option is to do Air Bnb with your friends and split the cost. If you’ve made it this far then I know you’ll be booking soon. You will have the best time.
My Final Tips:
·     Bring cash, exchange some currency
·     Don’t wear camouflage, it’s illegal
·     Pay for professional makeup, you’ve spent so much on your costume already
·     Pay for a photographer, quality photos are hard to get while everything is moving so fast
·     Drink water, stay hydrated.
