Hurricane Helene has sadly claimed the lives of 128 people. Our thoughts are with the victims and their families during this difficult time. It hit several states, cities and communities on the Southeast coast. One of which was Central Florida. Both Tampa Bay and St Pete are special cities: a unique blend of southern charm, vibrance, and resilience. Hurricane Helene, while a devastating event, has only reinforced this sentiment for me.
Living through a hurricane can be a deeply emotional experience. The fear, uncertainty, and the aftermath can leave a lasting impact. But it’s in these moments that the true spirit of a community shines through.
Tampa’s Hurricane History
Tampa, like many coastal cities, has a history of facing hurricanes. The city has endured its fair share of storms from Hurricane Elena in 1985 to the more recent Hurricane Irma in 2017. These experiences have shaped the community's spirit and resilience.
Is Florida Hurricane Prone?
Florida's geographic location makes it particularly vulnerable to hurricanes. The warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean provide the perfect breeding ground for these powerful storms. Coupled with the state's low-lying coastal areas, the risk of flooding and storm surge is significantly higher.
The Impact of Hurricanes
The aftermath of a hurricane can be devastating. The destruction of homes, businesses, and infrastructure can have far-reaching consequences. Many Floridians face significant financial burdens due to property damage, insurance claims, and the rising cost of living.
The frequent hurricanes have significantly impacted insurance costs in Florida. Homeowners and businesses have seen their premiums skyrocket as insurers adjust to the increasing risk. My insurance has doubled since I moved to downtown Tampa in 2021. And most carriers left the state of Florida because of the natural disasters.
