5 Things to avoid when planning a trip to Trinidad Carnival
Trinidad Carnival is one of the most exciting and vibrant festivals in the world. With its colorful costumes, pulsating music, and electrifying atmosphere, it’s no wonder that people from all over the globe flock to Trinidad to experience this incredible event.
However, if you’re planning a trip to Trinidad Carnival for the first time, there are a few things you should avoid doing. Here are five tips to help you make the most of your trip:
1. Not booking your flights and accommodation well in advance.
Trinidad Carnival is one of the most popular events in the Caribbean, so it’s important to book your flights and accommodation well in advance, especially if you’re traveling during peak season. Prices tend to go up significantly the closer you get to the event, so it’s best to start planning early. I’ve not paid less than $900 just for the flight and I booked 9 months in advance. You need to be plan things with friends well in advance and plan with people you can trust because you will want to book as a group for the hotel to save as much as possible.
2. Not getting a costume.
No Trinidad Carnival experience is complete WITHOUT a costume. Costumes are typically elaborate and colorful, and they’re a great way to get into the spirit of the festival. You should purchase a costume from one of the many costume bands in Trinidad. Some of the major bands are Tribe, Yuma and The Lost Tribe
3. Not packing for the heat and humidity.
Trinidad is a tropical island, so the weather can be quite hot and humid. Be sure to pack light, comfortable clothing, and don’t forget to bring sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat. Carnival Monday is another day to wear a colorful festival outfit but don’t make the mistake I made and wear multiple layers. Wear minimal clothing, it is hot and it will get destroyed by paint. An inexpensive bathing suit is all you need.
4. Not staying hydrated.
It’s important to stay hydrated, especially when you’re dancing in the sun all day. Be sure to drink plenty of water on the road to balance out any sugary or alcoholic drinks, which can dehydrate you. I brought a large disposable bottle of water with me each morning and before any event. You will be walking and dancing a lot and it will be helpful to say hydrated throughout the day.
5. Not being prepared for the crowds.
Trinidad Carnival is a massive event, so be prepared for large crowds. Think Times Square in New York City on New Years Eve crowded. It’s a good idea to have a plan in place in case you get lost or separated from your friends because that can happen very easily.
